Mirror World #5

This work is inspired from one of my journeys to Yellow Island. While sitting at anchor in my small boat near the northern cliffs of the island I envisioned the island as a vessel for the web of life that contains both the land and the shoreline beneath the water surrounding the island. Thousands of herring ride the currents that circle the island providing food for the sea birds, seals, and a myriad of other creatures that reside there.

I sketched the vessel in my journal as a web like form that spoke to me of the interlaced and entangled life I experienced around me. Later, in the studio I translated the sketch into an engraved carving on wood panel and combined it with my photography. The photograph is from video I recorded while swimming in the kelp beds of nearby islands.

An AR (augmented reality) interactive component accompanies this work. Using the ARTIVIVE app, hold your camera up to the main image above and witness silvery herring swimming through the vessel. Shown below is a video snapshot of the AR experience.

Original pen & ink sketch from my journal. Yellow island is ablaze every spring with an abundance of wildflowers. The purple Camus is particularly prominent on this island, reflected in the colors of the original sketch.
